Overview of Fenbendazole
Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic (dewormer) from the benzimidazole class, widely used in veterinary medicine to treat a variety of gastrointestinal parasites in animals such as dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and poultry. It works by disrupting the parasite’s microtubule function, leading to energy depletion and death of the worm. Fenbendazole is effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, certain tapeworms, and some protozoal infections like Giardia. It is not approved for use in humans and should only be administered under veterinary guidance.
Conditions & Treatment Scope
In veterinary practice, fenbendazole is prescribed for:
- Roundworm infections (Toxocara, Toxascaris)
- Hookworm infections (Ancylostoma, Uncinaria)
- Whipworm infections (Trichuris)
- Tapeworm infections (Taenia, but not Dipylidium caninum without combination)
- Giardia infections (as part of a treatment protocol)
- Lungworm and certain tissue parasites in various species
It is available in oral formulations such as granules, suspensions, and tablets, with dosing based on species, weight, and specific infection.
Important Safety & Precautions
- For veterinary use only; not for human consumption. Human ingestion can cause adverse effects; there is insufficient clinical evidence for safety and efficacy in humans.
- Pregnant or lactating animals should only be treated under strict veterinary supervision, as fenbendazole can affect fetal development.
- Avoid use in animals with known hypersensitivity to benzimidazoles.
- Adverse reactions in animals may include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or allergic reactions. Contact a veterinarian if these occur.
- Always follow the veterinarian's dosage instructions; overdosing can lead to toxicity.
- Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and keep out of reach of children.
- Consult a veterinarian before combining with other medications, as interactions may occur.
