Overview of Albendazole
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent belonging to the benzimidazole class. It exerts its effect by binding to parasite β-tubulin, inhibiting microtubule polymerization, which leads to impaired glucose uptake, energy depletion, and eventual death of susceptible helminths. Clinically, albendazole is a cornerstone treatment for a wide range of tissue and intestinal parasitic infections, including neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease. Recognized on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, its efficacy against both larval and adult stages of cestodes and nematodes makes it a critical therapeutic option in infectious disease management.
Conditions & Treatment Scope
Albendazole is indicated for the treatment of:
- Neurocysticercosis caused by Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) larvae
- Hydatid disease (echinococcosis) caused by Echinococcus granulosus or E. multilocularis
- Intestinal nematode infections: ascariasis (roundworm), hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus), trichuriasis (whipworm), strongyloidiasis, enterobiasis (pinworm)
- Cutaneous larva migrans
- In certain combination regimens for filarial infections and as part of mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths
Important Safety & Precautions
- Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to albendazole or any benzimidazole; pregnancy (especially first trimester). Women of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test before initiation and use effective contraception during and for 1 month after treatment.
- Hepatotoxicity: Monitor liver function (transaminases) before and every 2 weeks during prolonged therapy. Risk of elevated liver enzymes and rare acute liver failure; caution in hepatic impairment.
- Bone Marrow Suppression: Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia may occur; monitor blood counts regularly with extended use.
- Drug Interactions: Cimetidine, dexamethasone, and praziquantel may increase albendazole serum levels. Antiepileptics might reduce efficacy.
- Administration: Take with a fatty meal to enhance absorption. For neurocysticercosis, concurrent corticosteroid and anticonvulsant therapy is often required to manage inflammatory reactions.
- Common Adverse Effects: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, reversible alopecia. Seek immediate medical help if signs of liver injury (jaundice, dark urine), severe abdominal pain, or hypersensitivity develop.
- Prescription Only: Albendazole must be used under medical supervision. Self-medication is strongly discouraged.
