  5. Minoxidil 5% w

Active Ingredient

Minoxidil 5% w

Overview

Minoxidil 5% w is a topical medication primarily used to treat hair loss. It belongs to a class of drugs known as potassium channel openers, originally developed as an oral antihypertensive. When applied to the scalp, it stimulates hair growth in individuals with androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness).

How Minoxidil 5% w works

Minoxidil is a prodrug that is converted in the body to its active form, minoxidil sulfate. It opens ATP-sensitive potassium channels in smooth muscle cells, causing hyperpolarization and relaxation of blood vessels (vasodilation). While its exact mechanism in hair regrowth is not fully understood, minoxidil is believed to improve blood flow to hair follicles, prolong the anagen (growth) phase, and stimulate follicular cells to produce thicker, longer hair shafts.
