  5. Minoxidil 1.

Active Ingredient

Minoxidil 1.

Overview

Minoxidil 1. is a medication belonging to the class of potassium channel openers and vasodilators. It is available in topical forms (solution or foam) for promoting hair growth in androgenetic alopecia, and in oral tablets for managing hypertension. The designation '1.' may indicate a 1% concentration, though typical topical strengths are 2% and 5% for men and women. Its primary use in dermatology is to slow hair loss and stimulate regrowth.

How Minoxidil 1. works

Minoxidil 1. works by widening blood vessels and opening potassium channels in cell membranes. When applied topically, it is thought to improve blood flow to hair follicles, prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, and stimulate follicular cells. This may be mediated by its active metabolite, minoxidil sulfate, which enhances cell proliferation and reduces apoptosis. The exact mechanism for hair growth is not fully understood, but it involves increased blood supply and direct stimulation of follicle cells.

Uses

  • Topical treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male- and female-pattern hair loss) to slow hair loss and promote regrowth.
  • Oral treatment of severe hypertension, usually in combination with other medications.
  • Off-label uses include alopecia areata and other hair loss conditions under medical supervision.

Side effects

  • Common local side effects (topical use): scalp irritation, itching, dryness, flaking, erythema, and unwanted hair growth on adjacent skin.
  • Serious effects: Systemic absorption may rarely cause dizziness, fast heartbeat, chest pain, swelling of hands/feet, sudden weight gain, or allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • Oral minoxidil may cause fluid retention, tachycardia, and pericardial effusion, requiring close monitoring.

Precautions

  • Do not use if allergic to minoxidil or any excipients.
  • For topical use: avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin. Wash hands after application.
  • Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice.
  • Oral minoxidil is a potent vasodilator; it must be initiated under medical supervision, and sodium/fluid retention must be controlled with diuretics.
  • May interact with other vasodilators or antihypertensives, enhancing hypotension.
  • Use with caution in heart disease, kidney disease, or pheochromocytoma.
